With over 35,000 members, our local PTAs combined are the largest child advocacy group in Guilford County. The Guilford County Council of PTAs (GCC PTAs) is chartered under the authority of the NC PTA to unify and strengthen local PTAs. Our Executive Board is made up of volunteers from schools across the county, the Superintendent (or designee), three principal representatives, two representatives from the Board of Education, and a representative from the Guilford County Association of Educators.

Above is the list of GCC PTAs Executive Board members for the 2009-10 school year. Their term begins on July 1, 2009. If you have questions about any of the Board positions, please contact Velma Allen, President, GCCPTA @ velmaallenpta@gmail.com

The Full Council's voting members include the PTA President and Principal for each school that has paid the Council dues and is in good standing with the NC PTA (updated bylaws, State and National dues paid).  Joining the Council allows your PTA to participate in a wide range of GCC PTAs Programs:
  • Fall and Spring Leadership Training
  • Quarterly Full Council Meetings
  • Council Connection Newsletter
  • S.P.I.C.E (Strengthening Parent Involvement in Children's Education) Grants Program
  • Reflections Program
  • Annual Awards Banquet
  • Kids Vote Program
  • Council Website
  • Ongoing support for the following areas:  Exceptional Children, Cultural Arts, Health and Safety, Human Relations, Legislative, Education and Environment
  • Community Projects:  Fill the Bus, Tools for Schools, Coalition for Alcohol Responsible Education.
GCC PTAs is committed to uniting home, school, and community groups to advocate for quality education for all the youth of Guilford County.

To contact our President or other officer or chairperson, please call or email Velma Allen,
GCC PTAs President.  She will direct you to the appropriate Board member.

National Standards of Parent/Family Involvement

The National PTA has long supported the need for effectively involving parents and families in their children's education.  In 1997, the National PTA created and adopted the National Standards for Parent/Family Involvement Programs to be used along with other education content and performance standards and reform initiatives in support of establishing quality parent involvement programs that influence children's learning and success.  Each stand addresses a different type of parent involvement:
  • Communicating - communication between home and school is regular, two-way and meaningful.
  • Parenting - Parenting skills are promoted and supported.
  • Student learning - Parents play an integral role in assisting student learning.
  • Volunteering - Parents are welcome in the school, and their support and assistance are sought
  • School Decision making and advocacy - Parents are full partners in the decisions that affect children and families.
  • Collaborating with the Community - Community resources are used to strengthen schools, families and students learning.
These are standards were developed with education and parent involvement professional through the National Coalition for Parent Involvement in Education (NCPIE).  The standards were built upon the work of Joyce L. Epstein, Ph.D., of the Center of School, Family, and Community Partnerships from the Johns Hopkins University, who identified six types of parent involvement.
